Australia, UK and US Team-up to Test AI-enabled Drones
The partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States (AUKUS) achieved great results in locating, disabling, and destroying ground targets with a successful trial using AI-enabled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This exercise is the first military application of autonomy and artificial intelligence (AI) within the AUKUS framework, as it was held in the annual US-hosted multinational Project Convergence experimentation exercise.
Experts from the British Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) led the trial with the AUKUS partners, as excellent integration of AI and autonomous systems has been showcased. The trial also featured several drones from the nations working together in the same airspace coordinated by an AUKUS AI.
The exercise showed interoperability´s importance between the AUKUS nations, securing support for military personnel from each country by abilities developed collaboratively. Additionally, human life risk is significantly reduced thanks to AI-enabled UAVs that minimize time required to identify and engage enemy targets.
Thanks to the successful use of AI and autonomous systems, AUKUS nations are ready to defend their countries and allies against evolving threats. The AUKUS partnership continues to show great results in safeguarding Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific security.
