Oceanic Rescue by Drones
What can a drone do in the ocean? A drone was able to detect two paddleboarders in North Carolina´s Oak island ocean, casted 2000 feet away from the shore. Rescuers tracked the two young men the whole time using a drone, securing them later on with a rescue boat. The former firefighter and current drone pilot, Sean Barry said that this drone can fly in different types of weather and environments.
Besides flying in different types of weather, the drone is equipped with different modes camera able to spot people in pain. The drone also contains speakers that can transmit instructions, in addition to stored life-preserving equipment.
The drone flies to the ocean with a device that can be activated by touching the water, inflating an attached CO2 cartridge into a 26-inches long tube able to serve as a holder for the rescuees.
Oak Island Fire Department Chief Lee Price claims that the usage of these drones in ocean rescue is underrated. The drones provide necessary help faster while keeping the rescuers safe, along with rapid deployment, accuracy, and speed.
Oak Island Beach is a famous destination for tourists in summer. About 100 people die every year due to undetectable riptides and rip currents. The Fire Department will reduce the number of deaths thanks to drone technology.
