Red Cat Holdings Replaces Skydio in a US Army Drone Contract
Red Cat Holdings, a leading defense-focused aerial solutions provider, has successfully won the US army´s Short Range Reconnaissance (SRR) Program of Record contract, replacing previous holder Skydio. This win emerged after an evaluation process that took into consideration the company´s next generation drone system, Black Widow.
The new contract will provide the US army with over 5880 Black Widow systems in a period of 5 years with an estimation of up to $99.8 million (€96.8 million). Red Cat´s choice came after excessive tests by different army groups, including the Army Maneuver Battle Lab and the Project Management Office for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems. The CTO of Red Cat and Teal´s founder said that this contract marks a pivotal moment for the company.
The win over the contract was no easy task for Red Cat, especially with Skydio being the largest manufacturer of small drones in the US. Skydio´s arsenal of the new X10D drone was in tough competition with Red Cat´s Black Widow system.
About Red Cat´s Black Widow system
Red Cat´s Black Widow system features new-gen night vision technology, along with other capabilities like high-definition video transmission, advanced flight controllers, and artificial intelligence. The system is also certified with its Blue UAS Certification and FAA compliance with military standards.
`This system will transform battlefield operations and help protect soldiers´ lives´, stated Jeff Thompson, Red Cat´s CEO. The company´s win over the contract was no coincidence since Red Cat has successfully acquired FlightWave Aerospace, introduced the TRICHONTM fixed-wing VTOL, and launched the ARACHNIDTM family.
`Warfare has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past two years, with a significant shift towards drone technology, exemplified by the SRR Black Widow. It is an honor to support the U.S. Army by delivering the Black Widow to our warfighters. We believe this advanced technology will enable the Army to shape the battlefield, save soldiers’ lives, and serve as a powerful tool in their arsenal,´ said Jeff Thompson. `This long-term contract will give us the capability to continue to improve the Black Widow, scale production and improve margins´, he added.
