300 drones for Switzerland from Swisscom and Nokia

Nokia is planning to send over 300 drones to Switzerland by next fall for the purpose of inspecting infrastructure and police operations. According to a press release, a collaboration between Nokia and Swisscom Broadcast will make drones accessible, as the Swiss company wants to expand the so-called service ´´Drone Flights as a Service´´, a service the company has been offering for the past year.

The usage of these remote-controlled drones will help monitor and collect information in different places and facilities such as public spaces, prisons and police facilities. Swisscom explains that first responders´ safety will increase with sensor-supported reconnaissance.

Infrastructure monitoring

The drones will have easy access to difficult places and help maintain power lines, bridges and buildings, claims Swisscom.

´´In the future, a company with critical infrastructure can simply order a drone when dangerous or difficult-to-access inspections are due. Ongoing inspections help to detect and repair damage at an early stage´´, adds Swisscom broadcast.

This project is second to Belgian telecommunications provider Citymesh partnership, as Nokia delivered 70 drones to the company last year, able to connect to the control center via 4G and 5G mobile networks. These drones can be sent across the country to assess situations.
