Hospitals in South Dublin receive medical supplies by drones to avoid traffic jam

A partnership between Wing and Apian, and healthcare technology company “Medtronic” will serve hospitals by sending them medical supplies using drones. This collaboration between the two parties will showcase the importance of drone technology in healthcare logistics.

Due to traffic jams, urban locations often experience delays in receiving medical supplies. Wing’s drones are a better solution as they will fly direct routes at speeds that can reach 100km per hour, making it an efficient way to supply rural places without having to worry about traffic congestion.

‍

What does the delivery service contain?

Wing’s drones will start with delivering sutures, surgical tools, ingestible cameras and heart valve repair products. Future deliveries will be expanded to Implantable Cardiac Defibrillators (ICDs) and pacemakers.

Technology integration into healthcare industry means more opportunities

Blackrock Health’s CEO, Dr. Caroline Whelan states that innovation is the ultimate goal of what they do, and this collaboration will open the door to existing opportunities related to technology integration into healthcare industry, leading to sustainability.

“We are excited by the possibilities that come with this drone delivery service, and hope to expand this beyond receiving medical supplies, by extending use to other services in time between our hospitals.” quotes Dr. Whelan.

Parties are making efforts with the Irish Aviation Authority to ensure smooth operations, with 100 flights planned weekly.
